Exchange internship program at Indiana University

This month, Duc, a member of the GEOI research group, participated in an internship at the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, under the supervision of Professor Chanh Kieu. The internship was part of an exchange program within the project “Tropical Cyclone Genesis Forecasting Using Machine Learning,” funded by the Vingroup Innovation Foundation (VINIF).

Forecasting Results of the Tropical Cyclone Prediction System

The main goal of the trip was to develop an operational software tool for typhoon forecasting, to be transferred to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting for implementation. Although the internship lasted only two weeks, thanks to the close collaboration among the team members, the software was successfully completed on schedule, meeting both the project’s technical requirements and the Center’s operational needs. Moreover, under Professor Chanh Kieu’s dedicated guidance, the team members also gained valuable professional knowledge and work experience.

Team travel to apple orchard

During this time, Duc also had the opportunity to travel and visit several local attractions. The first stop was an apple orchard, where visitors could directly enjoy various types of apples right from the trees and harvest them to take home. This was quite an interesting model, providing visitors with hands-on experiences while helping orchard owners save labor costs. Next was a visit to Indianapolis, the capital city of Indiana. The city was bustling and lively, in stark contrast to the calm and peaceful atmosphere of Indiana University’s campus.

Although the trip was short, it was highly productive and rewarding, bringing the team valuable experiences and memorable moments.
